When Paivi, a soft-spoken 62-year-old grandmother and trained medical doctor, saw that her own Christian denomination was drifting away from its roots, she tweeted about it, using a Bible verse. For that act, she could end up spending two years in jail!

Hostility to religion and free speech are increasing across the globe. Consider the current situation in Finland, where parliament member Paivi Rasanen’s articulation of her biblical views on marriage and sexuality have put her on trial for “hate speech.”

When Paivi, a soft-spoken 62-year-old grandmother and trained medical doctor, saw that her own Christian denomination was drifting away from its roots, she tweeted about it, using a Bible verse. For that act, she could end up spending two years in jail!

On February 14, just before the final hearing of her trial began, FRC’s Special Advisor for Religious Freedom, Pastor Andrew Brunson — who we prayed for during his 2018 trial in Turkey — delivered our prayer pledge to Mrs. Rasanen with the names of 14,341 fellow believers like you who signed it. What an encouragement and witness!

Let’s continue to pray for the outcome of her case as we await the final decision expected next week on March 30. May we see religious freedom and free speech upheld as an example for all of Europe.

Fostering a movement of truth and action starts in the realm of public opinion — which is why FRC has invested so much in radio, TV, social media, and other emerging channels.

We educate Americans on what religious liberty is and why it matters. We cover the stories that mainstream media would love to ignore. We call out Big Business and Big Tech for ignoring the trampling of human rights.

A few days after the trial, Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas) and I discussed Paivi’s case on Fox & Friends.

Rep. Roy began, “People can disagree about [LGBT] issues, right? But you’re talking about putting people in jail for quoting the Bible… [In essence the Finnish prosecutor is saying] ‘Don’t worry, you can keep your Bibles, but you know what? You just can’t say you agree with it.’

The congressman warned, “This is a really chilling reality in a western civilized country. This isn’t Iran. This isn’t China. This is Finland. And the American people need to know this is coming to a theater near you.”

I then shared with those watching that:

“Faith is at the stake. The Bible is on trial. The outcome of this case could literally criminalize the Christian faith and free speech. This case is a warning to the Western world that, quite frankly, has been asleep in the pew. This is not about some theologically remote part of Scripture. The prosecution made clear that this is about the heart of the gospel. The use of the word sin, they said, can be harmful and therefore illegal. And this, of course, is the core teaching of the gospel that we’re all sinners and we need a savior and that savior is Jesus Christ.”

That’s a message the world just can’t stand.

Many have tried to silence FRC’s voice for truth, from the domestic terrorist who attacked our Washington, D.C. headquarters in 2012 to the Chinese Communist Party sanctioning me along with other leaders like Mike Pompeo, Sen. Tom Cotton, and Sen. Josh Hawley.
